Our St. George students who completed their business studies projects in June received a visit from the “Stop San Filippo Syndrome” charity to hear about how the money they raised will be used to help their cause. This is a rare genetic metabolism disorder, a change in a single gene that makes a child’s body unable to break down certain carbohydrates (sugars). Which leads to serious problems in the brain and nervous system. Most children with the syndrome die in their teen years despite appearing healthy as toddlers. There is no cure yet for this syndrome, but doctors and researchers are working hard to find better treatments for it. It was great to see so many of our learners gain a better understanding of this rare disease and hopefully, they can spread awareness of the charity’s cause.
